Sweet Shop Summer Camp

Dates:
Duration: 4 hours each day

  • Decorating (fake!) cakes

  • And much more!

Campers should bring a lunch and water bottle each day of camp.

Charm Your Shoes! Open Studio

Duration: 3½ hours (open house)
Ages: All Ages
Led by: Locally Crafted Workshop (@createatlocallycrafted)

Charms are one of the hottest summer trends, and we’re all in. If it stands still, we’re putting charms on it. Maximalist crafting is our vibe.

Want to get in on the fun? We’ve got a bunch of charm-themed events in the works, but let’s start with shoes! Kick off your Memorial Day weekend by jazzing up a pair of kicks with beads, charms, pins, chains and more. (Parents: Nothing we are offering is permanent! No paint, no glue. Everything is removable. We’re moms too.) Grab a friend, a soccer team or the cousin who is in town for the holiday, and come craft with us.

This event is NOT just for kids. We’ll have plenty of choices so crafters of any age can make a perfectly personalized pair. Whether your style is gold and pearls, or rainbows and smiley faces, we’ll have something you’ll love.

Please bring or wear a pair of shoes WITH laces. Any kind of sneakers will work, from canvas shoes like Converse or Keds, to your everyday athletic sneakers. A lot of the embellishments are threaded on or clipped to the laces, so that’s a requirement. We’re not embellishing Crocs or sandals (not this time, anyway!).

Each ticket is good for enough embellishments for one thoroughly decorated pair of shoes. We’ll provide:

  • Beads and hardware to create shoe chains or thread on to laces

  • Acrylic links to create chains

  • Charms

  • Safety pins (plus small beads for an ’80s-style vibe)

  • Flair buttons (you can press your own buttons if you’d like!)

  • Whatever else we can come up with between now and then

Drop-ins are welcome, but we'd prefer if you'd buy a ticket ahead so we can have plenty of materials on hand. Plus, tickets are cheaper when you buy ahead!

Led by: Becky Sher (@createatlocallycrafted)

Have you seen the beaded plants trending on Instagram and TikTok? The minute we saw them, we made one. Here’s what we learned: They’re super fun to make, the final product is amazing, and they require A LOT of green beads. We’ll provide:

  • A 3-inch pot for your beaded greenery.

  • Wire and styrofoam (the boring but necessary pieces).

  • Green beads in lots of shapes, sizes and shades.

  • Accent beads in other colors if you want to create a flowering plant (optional, but cute!).

  • All the tools and instruction you need for the project.

This project is very simple, but it takes some time to make a nice full plant, so grab a friend you’ve been wanting to catch up with, or meet new crafty buddies while you bead. Kids 10 and up are welcome.

Galaxy Shoe Painting Workshop

Galaxy Shoe Painting Workshop

Duration: 2 hours
Ages: 10+ (ages 10-13 with an adult)
Led by: Susan Duren (@susanspiration)

Get ready to space out! Looking for a way to spice up those old (or new!) canvas shoes? You’ve come to the right place.

Susan Duren of Susanspiration (@susanspiration) will share her signature galaxy pattern, perfect for beginners or anyone who wants a relaxing evening of painting. Crafters will learn color blending techniques, and other helpful tips for painting shoes. Participants will even have the option of making their shoes glow in the dark at no extra cost. Just bring a pair of shoes, and Susan will provide the rest.

IMPORTANT: In order for the paint provided for this workshop to stick to the surface, SHOES MUST BE CANVAS.

Think:

  • Vans

  • Converse

  • Keds

They don’t have to be big-name brands. Walmart sells cheap canvas shoes that work great. NO ATHLETIC SHOES, AIR FORCE ONES, OR ANYTHING LEATHER. If the surface is slick, the paint will not stick.

Also note that paint will probably stick to some material such as mesh, crochet or suede. However, those surfaces are not recommended. For this paint blending technique, canvas is best.

Susan: that’s me! + Inspiration: that’s nature, animals, colorful things, toys, and you! = Susanspiration.

Susan has a BFA with an emphasis in painting. She has been painting shoes for a little over 10 years. She loves Crayola, color theory, cats, surprise toys, celebrating events, mimosas with brunch, ’90s nostalgia, pizza, miniatures, laughing, and of course her beloved cat, Maya.

You can find her on Etsy, Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook using @Susanspiration, and on TikTok at @susanspirationart.

Open Studio: Fidget Bracelet Bead Bar

Duration: 3 hours (open house)
Ages: All ages, but under 8 will need adult assistance
Led by: Locally Crafted Workshop (@createatlocallycrafted)

We’ve been having fun experimenting at our Bead Bar, and our latest obsession is fidget bracelets. The first time we started to see these pop up online, we new we had to try it. We use a combination of small and large beads to create these cool jewelry pieces, where the large beads slide along the bracelet for a fun effect. These bracelets aren’t just for kids — everyone who sees them can’t help but play with them. And they add a fun and colorful pop to your spring accessories. Not a jewelry lover? Make bag or backpack charms.

Join us for an open studio afternoon during the Locally Crafted Makers Market and we’ll show you our tricks for making a stack of these fun and interactive bracelets.

We’ll provide:

  • Our favorite stretchy elastic.

  • Small beads for creating the base of your bracelet.

  • Large-hole beads to create the sliding effect. Rainbows, stars, hearts, sports balls and more!

  • Giant safety pins and other keychain hardware if you want to try making a fidget charm to attach to a bag or backpack.

  • Instructions and inspiration!

Because some of the beads are quite small, kids under 8 should be accompanied by an adult to assist in beading. They’ll love adding the larger beads to create the fidget effect. Make it a team effort!

Crochet Next Steps: Lemon Coasters

Crochet Next Steps: Lemon Coasters

Duration: 2½ hours
Ages: 13+ (with basic crochet knowledge)
Led by: Becky Sher (@createatlocallycrafted)

It’s time to take your basic crochet knowledge and actually make something you can actually use! In this advanced beginner workshop, you’ll learn to crochet a bright and cheerful lemon-shaped coaster. You’ll practice crocheting in the round (instead of back and forth in rows), which is the foundation for many crochet projects, including the classic granny square.

Please note: This workshop is not for crafters who have never picked up a hook. You should be fairly comfortable with creating a slip knot, making chain stitches, and working single and double crochet stitches. You certainly don't need to be an expert, just a somewhat confident beginner. We will do a quick review of the basics, but this workshop is not for absolute beginners. Please watch for our introductory crochet workshops!

In this workshop, you’ll learn:

  • How to choose the right yarn for a project. We’ll use 100 percent cotton yarn so you can use your finished project as a coaster or trivet.

  • How to crochet in the round to create the lemon shape.

  • How to work a range of crochet stitches, including half-double crochet and triple crochet.

  • How to create a leaf and flower (and how to attach them) to embellish your project. (The flower is perfect for adding to all kinds of projects!)

  • How to block your coaster for a perfect finished project.

All materials will be provided.

This workshop is for crafters 13 to adult, with basic crochet knowledge.
